Press Conference Urging the Cameron County Commissioners to Deny Tax Abatements for LNG Terminals
BROWNSVILLE, TX — On Wednesday, May 29, a coalition of Rio Grande Valley organizations and Cameron County residents will gather outside the County courthouse building in Brownsville with banners and signs to urge the commissioners to vote against tax abatement deals for the Texas LNG and Rio Grande LNG projects, which could happen at the June 4 Commissioners court meeting.
Speakers from different organizations will share their concerns about the proposed LNG projects, which would pollute the community’s air and destroy wildlife habitat, as well as their opposition to these companies’ request for tax abatements that would allow them to avoid paying millions of dollars of taxes to low-income Cameron County. The South Texas Environmental Justice Network members will share the details of the new 2024 report: “LNG Tax Abatements are a bad deal for Cameron County.”

Background:
For years, Rio Grande Valley residents and organizations have opposed the construction of Texas LNG, Rio Grande LNG, and the associated Rio Bravo Pipeline. The City of Port Isabel, Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe, and Sierra Club are legally challenging the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for cutting corners in their review of the LNG projects’ environmental justice and climate impacts. The City of Port Isabel recently passed a resolution opposing any tax abatements for the LNG projects.
