We’re Hiring! Collaboration Fundraising Strategist + Coordinator

About the Brownsville Climate Justice Collaborative
Texas is ground zero for greenhouse gas emissions in the United States and was responsible for releasing 636 mmt of carbon in 2019 – almost twice as much as the next state, California. The far west side of Texas is home to the Permian Basin, the world’s largest oil and gas production field, and the highest emitter of methane in the country. A growing industry has sprung up along the Texas Gulf Coast to refine, liquify, and manufacture a global supply of these fossil products despite the arrival of increasingly severe climate disasters in the region and across the world. If the dozens of proposed new refineries, liquefaction, and petrochemical facilities currently proposed for the region are built, they will equate to a carbon bomb that will evaporate any hope of meeting global climate goals.

Residents and Tribal community members along the Texas Gulf Coast are tired of being considered sacrifice zones for the fossil fuel industry and have begun to fight back. Two organizations and one tribal nation are partnering on shared work to resist the spread of these pernicious forces in the lower Rio Grande Valley region. These groups include: Border Workers United, the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, and the South Texas Environmental Justice Network. Together, they make up the Brownsville Climate Justice Collaborative.
Together, they are organizing at the intersection of multiple issues:

  • Challenging the land grabs and pollution caused by the growth of the space exploration and fossil fuel development industries;
  • Resisting the correlated increases in militarization;
  • Staying prepared for and responding to ongoing climate crises.
